"Our ordinary mind always tries to persuade us that we are nothing but acorns and that our greatest happiness will be to become bigger, fatter, shinier acorns; but that is of interest only to pigs. Our faith gives us knowledge of something better: that we can become oak trees." - E. F. Schumacher
Hello! Please allow us to introduce ourselves ...
Little Acorn Books is a small (ie: teeny-tiny!), family-owned-and-operated bookstore, currently based online (and formerly at the markets). It is our dream to have a real, 'bricks and mortar' store, like the one on the Contact Us page. Ah, such exciting dreams we have ... a beautiful store with a workshop space, healing rooms, and a little theatre attached, for starters! For the moment, though, we have intentionally embraced a slower, gentler lifestyle, living as mindfully, simply, and sustainably as possible, on a 500 acre property in the Queensland bush ... away from modern society's glorification of busy, and its myriad, sparkly distractions! We are mindful of Gandhi's admonition to "be the change" that we wish to see in the world. When Ethan (12 yo) has grown out of childhood and embarked on his own life adventures, we will then turn our energies to creating our physical Dream Store, rooted firmly in our own family's experience of living and loving in this mindful, conscious way!
To tell you a little about ourselves, we are a home-educating, AP family of avid bookworms. (Opening a new shipment of books is always cause for great excitement around here!) We draw on Buddhist philosophy, as well as the Archetypal and Transpersonal paradigms of healing. Aside from books, books, and more books, Juliette has a passion for storytelling, Spiritual Numerology, Aura Soma, Astrology, the Expressive Therapies, travel (the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, being her favourite place on the entire planet ... so far!), studying the importance of play (especially 'risky play'), and collecting vintage crockery. Having grown up on a 50,000 acre property in the middle of the Queensland outback, Heath is a strong advocate for embracing a simpler, 'slower' life, and is passionate about mindful, simplicity parenting. A home-educated lad himself, he loves archery, martial arts & Bushido, permaculture (actually, all things 'sustainability'), and being in Mother Earth's wild, natural spaces. He is currently training as a hypnotherapist, so that he may support others on their own healing paths. Our adventurous son, Ethan, is also a fervent martial artist and archer, with a strong fascination for dragons, treehouses, architecture, and the idea of travelling to many and varied, far-flung places of our world, like his parents and grandparents before him. (Wanderlust must be hereditary!) When he's not enjoying the view from the highest branch of the tallest tree, Ethan can usually be found curled up somewhere with a good book ... he always has a book or two with him, wherever he goes. As one of his favourite characters, Alcuin, says in Nadia Wheatley's The Greatest Treasure of Charlemagne the King, "A sensible person never goes anywhere without a book." Quite so!
Little Acorn Books' Beginnings, and our Guiding Ethos:
"Let's raise children who don't need to recover from their childhoods." - Pam Leo
Walking her own healing path from a dysfunctional childhood to a place of peace and emotional & mental well-being, and inspired by the courageous journeys of those who sought her out for Spiritual Numerology consultations, Juliette became deeply aware that it is easier to raise healthy, strong children than to try to put Humpty Dumpty back together again as an adult! Inspired by Pam Leo's call to "raise children who don't need to recover from their childhoods," she realised that if we are to create a world of peace, compassion, and respect, humanity needs to:
a) heal and transform, individually; and
b) embrace a more conscious and emotionally-intelligent parenting paradigm, as a collective whole.
To quote Charles Raison, "One generation full of deeply loving parents would change the brain of the next generation, and with that, the world." Absolutely!
Discovering the work of Buckminster Fuller, Juliette became fascinated with his decision to embark on what he called "an experiment to discover what the little, penniless, unknown individual might be able to do effectively on behalf of all humanity that great nations and private enterprise cannot do." Now there was a noble and inspiring call to action! The question was, though .... what could she, a 'little, penniless, unknown individual' effectively do on behalf of all humanity?? Hmmmmm ...
As part of her own healing journey, Juliette realised that she would need to learn a completely new way of living and parenting. It was imperative to her that she did not pass her family dysfunctions on to yet another generation ... ie: to her own son. Being a bibliophile, she intuitively sought out books by thought leaders in the fields of attachment theory, neuroscience, and mindful parenting such as Dr Daniel Siegel, Alfie Kohn, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Gordon Neufeld, and Pam Leo. Unfortunately, though, while she discovered wonderful books via the Internet, they typically weren't available here, in Australia. Yes, the big book stores could get most of them in for her (if she was prepared to wait for six to eight weeks each time), but, ultimately, she got tired of constantly having to wait so long for each and every book. She reasoned that she couldn't possibly be the only parent, teacher, librarian, or counsellor that wanted access to these high-quality, meaningful resources! Realising that this was a tangible way to be of service to our community, she decided to start her own book store ... as you do!
So, in 2007 (with no prior knowledge of this industry), Juliette began the fascinating process of establishing Little Acorn Books, a book store that specialised in Mindful, Peaceful Parenting ... a small but definite first step on her ultimate path of celebrating and nourishing gentle families.
Then ... a wonderful blessing! Having been a single parent for 9 years (an integral and informing aspect of Juliette's parenting journey), Heath became an intimate part of the family. Inspired by his own incredible healing journey and his deep respect for the purpose of Little Acorn Books, he became actively involved in the operation and direction of the store, too. Little Acorn Books is now firmly rooted in both our joint and individual healing journeys, as well as in our absolute commitment to this 'new' way of being and living as a family.
Some of our customers will remember Little Acorn Books from our former eBay days, where we first started. We have since continued to build up our store and our range, and are excited to offer titles that are typically unavailable elsewhere in Australia. We derive enormous satisfaction from knowing that we are making these important titles readily available and accessible to like-minded Australian families, libraries, and schools. Once Ethan has grown and our own young family is no longer our immediate priority, we intend to create our Dream Store - a place of healing, education, community, and nourishing beauty, as well as a reliable retail source of these worthy and valuable resources. Such Visions and Dreams we have, all firmly rooted in our own passion and transformations, and in our family's love and journey!
In addition to our books and other lovely resources, we are currently developing a series of children's workshops aimed at empowering children to realise their full potential ... nurturing the mighty oak within! Entitled 'Nurturing Spirituality and Values in Children', these workshops draw strongly on the work of Peggy Joy Jenkins, as well as harnessing the wisdom, energy and work of other inspiring authors and teachers. We'll be sure to let you know when these classes are ready to begin. If you're interested in learning more about these, or in putting your name down in advance to hold a place, please let us know. We are also studying to become 'Simplicity Parenting' Leaders, so that we can offer the wonderful, gentle work of Kim John Payne here in Australia. We'll let you know when these workshops are up and running! Won't be long, now ... Further, at the request of some of our customers, Juliette is putting together some classes for those parents who are interested in Numerology, and who would like to have greater insight into themselves and their children ... gifts, talents, challenges. Again, if you're interested in learning more about these workshops, please let us know. We'd love to see you there!
Our Market Stall:
We thought we'd share some photos with you of our former market stall at the fabulous Northey Street Organic Markets in Windsor, Brisbane. It was a great deal of fun for the two and a half years that we operated it, after leaving eBay! We met some amazing, committed parents, and a plethora of fascinating, open-minded, friendly folk. Our time at the markets was certainly an important, and an integral part of the 'Little Acorn Books' story, as it helped us to more finely tune the store's ethos, moral anchor, and direction ... Here are some photos! :-)
|Our very first market stall!||A couple of months later ...|
with a marquis and everything!
And our thriving stall, around Christmas!
What a journey it has been so far! Thank you for your support as we continue to grow. Further, if you need any help in navigating the site, or simply don't like placing orders over the internet then, again, please feel free to contact us. We're here to be of service in any way possible!
